In October, 1980, Ernie Richard came out West searching for opportunity. When he arrived, he learned Quinn Contracting was looking for Steamfitter-Pipefitters. Ernie was interviewed and hired for a ‘short term job’ – an ironic statistic amongst many of Quinn’s long-term employees; in December of the same year, he was hired on the base crew for E1 and became the first Steamfitter-Pipefitter to work for Quinn on the NOVA, Joffre site.
Ernie was born and raised in Nova Scotia. He started his apprenticeship in the ship yards where he completed his Steamfitter-Pipefitter certification and Red Seal.
Ernie met his wife Donna in 1972 while he was still in Nova Scotia. They married July 12, 1974. Three years later they had their first son, Craig. In 1979, Ernie started working construction on the new power plant in Saint John’s, where his second son Chad was born.
Ernie has gained a wealth of expertise while working at the NOVA plant in many areas. He has worked with the Project Group, been a base crew Pipefitter at E2, was a Lead Hand, a Field Coordinator and a Plant Coordinator. He moved over to turnaround planning in 2011, where he remains today.
This past July, Ernie and Donna celebrated 41 years of marriage. Ernie enjoys traveling with his wife, golfing, curling and league darts at the legion. The Richards recently had a new member join their family, a grandson who is 19 months old. Both of their sons followed in Dad’s footsteps completing apprenticeship programs, one as a Pipefitter and the other as a Millwright.
Ernie’s contributions over the past 35 years have been instrumental to the company’s success, and he has proven himself to be an invaluable member to the team.
Congratulations Ernie on your accomplishment, and thank you for your contributions!
